DWG will not be sponsoring a Great Backyard Bird Count event this year, however that does not mean that you can’t participate in the International GBBC this February. Visit https://www.birdcount.org/ for information on how to participate, resources to help you identify the birds you see and more.
Whether it’s the lure of joining in a citizen science project or your enjoyment of getting out in nature and spending the time to really take in your surroundings, the Great Backyard Bird Count is a fabulous, free, worthwhile event to engage in. Even before DWG began holding a GBBC event, birders found Gardens Park to be a great place to go to in order to count birds. We have consistently found between 20 and 35 different species of birds during our bird count events in the park. Having terrestrial and water habitats in the park gives you the chance to see a wide variety of birds.
So create your own GBBC event on one or more days from Friday, February 13 through Monday, February 16. Get out by yourself, drag a neighbor or family member along or organize a neighborhood count. Just have fun and tell us how many species you were able to find.
